Theo Wegmann was born in Canton Appenzell in 1951. In his youth he played the piano, the flute, trumpet and clarinet. After taking his school-leaving certificate in Trogen in Canton Appenzell-Ausserrhoden he studied at the Zurich Conservatory, taking piano, organ, composition and counterpoint as his main subjects. He was made a lecturer in piano at the Conservatory already in 1975 and was subsequently appointed there to teach score playing, chamber music, composition, organ and organ improvisation.

Since 1978 Theo Wegmann has been the principal organist at the Reformed Church of Zurich-Witikon, where for many years he also ran the WITIKER CONCERTS that since 1946 have been a permanent fixture on the Zurich concert scene. His oeuvre as a composer today numbers some 500 works. He is also active as a concert pianist and organ recitalist, as a publisher and CD producer.

FLUCTUATING HARMONIES

Theo Wegmann’s aim of also being able to play new music in the church led him in the 1980s to a whole new approach to composing. He does not avoid tonality, though constant changes of harmony (i.e. fluctuating harmonies) mean it cannot always be clearly defined. This approach to composition is found primarily in his religious works (especially those based on chorales) and in his intentionally more accessible works.

Wegmann’s lifelong commitment to a transparent, clear approach to organ playing has led him to develop a particular playing technique in which the audience is able to perceive all the voices as part of a transparent structure.

Theo Wegmann – 1951 im Appenzellischen geboren – spielte schon in seiner Jugend neben Klavier auch Flöte, Trompete und Klarinette. Nach der Matura in Trogen begann er das Studium an der Musikakademie und Musikhochschule Zürich in den Hauptfächern Klavier, Orgel, Komposition sowie Kontrapunkt. Bereits 1975 wurde er als Dozent für Klavier an dieses Institut berufen. Weitere Lehraufträge folgten für die Fächer Partiturspiel, Kammermusik, Komposition, Orgel und Orgelimprovisation.

Seit 1978  ist er hauptamtlicher Organist der reformierten Kirchgemeinde Zürich-Witikon, wo er auch viele Jahre die WITIKER KONZERTE präsidierte, welche seit 1946 ein fester und wichtiger Bestandteil des Zürcher Konzertlebens sind. Sein kompositorisches Schaffen umfasst bisher rund 500 Werke. Gleichzeitig ist er als Konzertmusiker (Klavier und Orgel), Verleger und Produzent tätig.

FLUKTUIERENDE HARMONIK

Das Ziel, neue Musik auch in der Kirche spielen zu können, führten ihn anfangs der 80er Jahren 

zu einer völlig neuen Kompositionsweise. Die Tonalität nicht vermeidend, kann diese trotzdem 

- u.a. auf Grund von stetem Harmoniewechsel - (oft) nicht mehr eindeutig definiert werden (FLUKTUIERENDE HARMONIK). Diese Kompositionsart findet sich vor allem bei geistlichen (choralgebundenen etc.) und volksnahen Werken.

Lebenslanges Bemühen um ein transparentes, lichtes und durchhörbares Orgelspiel führte zu einer besonderen Technik des Orgelspiels, welche es erlaubt alle Stimmen dem Auditorium transparent und durchhörbar zu machen.
